The Union Budget 2025 has introduced the Bharatiya Bhasha Pustak Scheme, a new initiative to provide digital textbooks in Indian languages for school and college students.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced this scheme to make education more accessible in regional languages. The government aims to support students by offering study materials in digital formats, making learning easier and more inclusive.
Focus on Regional Language Education
The scheme aligns with the government’s push to use technology in education while promoting India’s diverse languages. Students from different states will now have better access to learning materials in their mother tongues.
This initiative builds on the ASMITA (Augmenting Study Materials in Indian Languages through Translation and Academic Writing) project, which was launched in July 2024. ASMITA aims to develop 22,000 books in 22 Indian languages over the next five years.
Collaboration for Language-Based Learning
The ASMITA project is a joint effort by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti, a committee under the Ministry of Education. It focuses on both translating existing academic books and encouraging original writing in regional languages.
With the Bharatiya Bhasha Pustak Scheme, millions of students will benefit from high-quality study materials in their native languages, creating a stronger foundation for education across India.
