The addition of 800 new MBBS seats in Maharashtra's medical colleges has been confirmed, with these seats becoming available in the third round of the Centralized Admission Process (CAP) for the 2024-25 academic year. This increase is part of the government's initiative to enhance medical education within the state, particularly to reduce the necessity for students to pursue medical studies abroad.
New Medical Colleges and Seat Distribution
The eight new government medical colleges that have been approved are located in the following districts:
- Buldhana
- Ambernath
- Hingoli
- Bhandara
- Amravati
- Washim
- Gadchiroli
- Jalna
Each college will have an intake capacity of 100 MBBS seats. Of the total 800 new seats, 15% (approximately 120 seats) will be allocated for the All India Quota (AIQ), while the remaining 85% (approximately 680 seats) will be reserved for state-level admissions.
Government's Commitment
The Maharashtra government has committed ₹403 crore for the infrastructure development of these colleges, aiming to ensure they meet the necessary standards set by the National Medical Commission (NMC) despite current deficiencies in faculty and facilities. The approval of these colleges aligns with a broader policy goal of establishing at least one medical college in every district of Maharashtra, thereby increasing local access to medical education.
Implications for Students
This expansion is expected to benefit many aspiring medical students who previously faced challenges securing admissions in existing colleges or had to opt for private institutions due to limited availability of government seats. However, concerns have been raised about students who have already secured seats in deemed colleges; there are calls for policies that would allow these students to transfer without financial penalties if they wish to switch to government colleges following this increase in available seats.
